It's not often that you see it, but the dumpster match is one of the most wild match concepts.
Gimmick matches have always been an essential cog of professional wrestling. Some gimmick matches are quite common, such as the steel cage, ladder, or the myriad of different ways of referring to a no disqualification match. However, others are rarer, like Three Stages of Hell, Punjabi Prison, Judy Bagwell on a forklift, or buried alive matches. But one gimmick match took place recently on the August 2 AEW Dynamite, as the Acclaimed defeated the Gunn Club.
After the match, the Acclaimed pushed the dumpster off the stage with both Gunn Club members inside, reminiscent of the build to the first Dumpster Match in WWE, where the New Age Outlaws pushed a dumpster containing Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie off a much higher stage on the February 2, 1998 Monday Night Raw. That move prompted an outstanding call from a concerned Jim Ross, who exclaimed "Wait a minute, wait a minute! Oh my god! Don't do you dare do that! GOOD GOD, THERE'S PEOPLE IN THERE!! THERE'S PEOPLE IN THERE!!"

There have only been three Dumpster Matches in WWE history, in addition to the recent contest in AEW. Today we're going to take out the trash and look back at each of the four. Unfortunately, the concept didn't exist while Duke "The Dumpster" Droese was around. He would've been a natural.
Following the disgusting act of the WWE Tag Team Champions New Age Outlaws, Cactus and Chainsaw Charlie challenged them to the inaugural Dumpster Match at WrestleMania 14. The object of the match was to get both opponents inside the dumpster with the lid shut, very similar to that of a Casket Match. The New Age Outlaws were just starting to come into their own at this point, and this feud helped elevate them.
The match was a ton of fun, chaotic, and full of weaponry. The Outlaws thought they had it won when they had both men in the dumpster, presumably shutting the lid, but Cactus got a hand up and put the mandible claw on both Outlaws. The action spilled backstage and the Outlaws had a 2-on-1 advantage after Chainsaw was powerbombed into the dumpster. Cactus fought them off with chair shots, as Chainsaw showed up on a forklift. Cactus proceeded to DDT Gunn on the forklift and drag Road Dogg onto it. Chainsaw lifted them up and put them in the dumpster and Cactus shut the lid for the victory. The celebration was short-lived, however, as they dropped the titles back to The Outlaws the next night on Raw.

After Road Dogg and X-Pac defeated the Dudley Boys in a Double Tables Match at Judgement Day, the Dudley's cost X-Pac a King of the Ring qualifying match on Raw. DX demanded a match against the Dudley's, and Vince McMahon announced they would compete in the second-ever Dumpster Match at King of the Ring.
The Dudley Boys were in control for the majority of the match, accentuated by some big chair shots to the head of Road Dogg and X-Pac, and Road Dogg getting powerbombed through two tables. X-Pac attempted to get the upper hand, but he wound up getting superplexed through two tables. Tori eventually hid in the dumpster, and DX came back with chair shots of their own to the Dudleys as they fell into the dumpster. DX shut the lid for the win, but the Dudleys got the last laugh. They pulled Tori out -- who was still in the dumpster -- hit the 3D on X-Pac and Road Dogg, and Bubba hit a massive top-rope powerbomb on Tori through a table.
Braun Strowman had dumped Kalisto the previous week on Raw, leading Kalisto to challenging him to a Dumpster Match. This was the shortest and most vanilla Dumpster Match, as the dumpster was set up right outside the ring and all the action took place in the ring. The much smaller Kalisto scored the upset win by kicking the knees of the giant Strowman on the apron, and he fell feet first into the dumpster.
The week prior on Rampage, The Acclaimed released a music video of their diss track to the Gunn Club called "Trash Day," and challenged them to a Dumpster Match on Dynamite. The Gunn Club made their entrance first, and the Acclaimed came out and attacked Billy Gunn with a trash can and threw him into the dumpster. Anthony Bowens hit both Gunn Club members with a trash can, as Max Caster rapped featuring this gem: "No filter, we ain't Instagram, we'll make the Ass Boys retire like Vince McMahon."

The Acclaimed dominated early, but the Gunn Club took control after Austin tossed Bowens off the dumpster onto trash cans, and Colten superplexed Caster on the ramp. Later, with Austin already in the dumpster, Caster hit an elbow off the tunnel onto Colten through a table, and proceeded to toss him in the dumpster for the win. And to throw salt in the wound, the Acclaimed dumped them off the stage as their daddy did to Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie 14 years prior.
